Nigeria: Burna Boy signs with SESAC
Nigerian Afro-fusion star Burna Boy has signed a deal with US performance rights organisation SESAC. The deal was made public this week.
A subsidiary of the Blackstone Group, SESAC was founded in 1930 originally as the Society of European Stage Authors and Composers. It is based in Nashville and is the second-oldest organisation in the US that caters to various areas of the music business including creation, administration and licensing.
“With his empowering lyrics and enrapturing beats, it’s no surprise that Burna Boy is leading the way for Afro-fusion throughout the world," SESAC creative services senior director Mario Prins said.
“His music and African roots are deeply felt, finding its way into every aspect of American Music. I believe we have yet to see the best of him as he continues to reach greater heights. SESAC is very proud to officially welcome Burna Boy to our direct affiliate family.”
Burna Boy said: “My music and I are global, but it makes sense to have SESAC represent me in the USA.”
Burna Boy joins an elite roster of international artists affiliated with SESAC, including Bob Dylan, Mariah Carey, Bryan-Michael Cox and Adele.
His SESAC deal arrives two months after the release of his highly successful fifth studio album Twice As Tall, the successor to 2019's Grammy-nominated African Giant. The 15-track collection features high-profile collaborations from Youssou N’Dour (Mali), Sauti Sol (Kenya), Naughty By Nature (US), Stormzy (UK) and Coldplay’s Chris Martin (UK). Timbaland (US), Anderson .Paak (US) and Mike Dean (US) are also credited as contributors to the album.
