SA: Halcyon Bluefish releases new single Promised Land
South African rock band Halcyon Bluefish has released a new single titled ‘Promised Land’.
Made up of Andrew Paine and Mandy Backström, Halcyon Bluefish is a darkwave group from Cape Town whose signature style is defined by a mix of darkwave, goth and shoegaze elements. Halcyon Bluefish’s latest release encapsulates its musical evolution, pushing the boundaries of creativity while maintaining its allure.
“The inspiration for ‘Promised Land’ came from years of listening to darkwave and goth artists,” Paine told Music In Africa. “We wanted to apply that aesthetic to our music and ‘Promised Land’ is the first single that we have recorded. The song speaks of the memories that flash through a person’s mind, just before that final breath and the crossing to what we perceive as our own personal ‘Promised Land’. We hope that those that get to hear the song will feel the moments of freedom and peace that lie in store for us.”
The song was produced by Desmond Kannemeyer known for his involvement with South African bands Retro Dizzy and Tough Guy. The bulk of the song was recorded using synthesisers and a drum machine, with Kannemeyer also lenting his guitar expertise to it.
The song’s visual elements enhance the auditory experience, creating a mesmerising synergy between sight and sound. ‘Promised Land’ not only beckons listeners into an ethereal auditory realm but also ushers them through a multisensory gateway where music and visuals converge.
