US R&B singer Maxwell cancels planned South Africa concerts

The performances were due to take place on 8 August at SunBet Arena in Pretoria and on 11 August at Grand Arena, GrandWest in Cape Town.

According to event organiser Vertex Events, Maxwell’s team informed it that the singer would no longer be able to travel to South Africa for the shows. The parties explored alternative arrangements, including moving the concert dates, but were unable to find a viable solution.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond my control, I’m unfortunately no longer able to perform in South Africa as planned,” Maxwell said in a statement. “This decision wasn't made lightly. I sincerely apologise to everyone who was looking forward to the shows. I appreciate your understanding and continued support. I hope to be back with you all soon.”

Vertex Events said neither party was in breach of its contract and that the cancellation followed discussions between Maxwell’s team and the organiser.

The organiser said preparations for the concerts, including venue arrangements, technical production and other logistics, had been completed. It added that Maxwell and his team had expressed a willingness to return to South Africa, with discussions expected to continue around possible dates in 2027.

Maxwell will not be able to perform in South Africa later in 2026, according to the organiser.

The cancellation affects all ticket holders, who will receive full refunds. Webtickets will contact ticket holders with information about the available refund options.

Vertex Events said it remained hopeful that Maxwell would return to South Africa in 2027.
