Sancho Gebre

Sancho Gebre (born Tamirat Gebre Lenga) is a popular Ethiopian singer, choreographer and dancer who was born in Wolaita Sodo, Ethiopia and raised in Areka, Wolaita, Ethiopia. Before joining the music industry he was a contestant in the Ethiopian Idol show which ran between 2009 and September 2011. He emerged winner in the Single Modern Dance category. He impersonated the dance routine of pop-star Michael Jackson during the contest. Because of this he is popular in Ethiopia as the “Ethiopian Michael Jackson”. Following his success in the Ethiopian Idol he went on to choreograph the music videos of many Ethiopia artists.

He was signed by the Shakura Music Production label, where he met and worked with the famous music producer Kamuzu Kassa and his brother Gildo Kassa, who shepherded his music career.

His 2016 first single release “Ande” was produced by Gildo Kassa at Shakura Music Production. It was an instant hit, mostly riding on the choreography of the video.

The second single “Atasayugn” released in 2017 topped the charts for the whole year, solidifying his arrival. “Atasayugn” literally means “don’t show me”. In the song he tells his beloved girl that he would choose her over any other girl. The dance-moves in the much-loved video became popular as “Sancho Gebre’s moves”.

He consecutively released the follow-up single “Tanamo” and collaborated with Micky Gonderegna in his other hit “Leba”, both released in 2019, and which stayed at the top of the charts for a while.

"Atasayugn" was nominated by Addis Music Awards for the Best Music Video and Best Single in 2018. “Tanamo" also nominated both titles the following year by Addis Music Awards and Leza Award for Best Single of the Year in 2019. The “Atasayugn” video, released by Hope Entertainment, is listed in 11th place on YouTube by views.

His latest release is “Fiyona”, which is a Tigrigna word. The song has hit more than 125K views within the first 24 hours, rating him among the top artists in Ethiopia.

He is currently working on his studio album with Gildo and Kamuzu Kassa at Shakura Music.
