Listen to DJ Poolboi’s single ‘Malo Okoma’ ft. Theresa Ng’ambi
Zambian Afro-traditional singer Theresa Ng’ambi has been featured by US electronic producer DJ Poolboi on a new single titled ‘Malo Okoma’.
The song is off the Austin-born producer’s upcoming album Stay Just a Little While Longer, which will be released on 18 March.
On ‘Malo Okoma’, Poolboi and Ng’ambi prove the importance of simplicity and gratitude through harmonious vocals and steady beats. Sung in English and Chewa, ‘Malo Okoma’ translates to ‘a beautiful place’. The track was conceived as a journey of healing by Ng’ambi, where she visualises and affirms the world in which she wants to exist. The song is fused with deep house tones to create a warm and welcoming soundscape.
“I first heard Theresa’s voice when I was writing the instrumental to this track over a year ago,” DJ Poolboi said. “She is amazingly talented and I thought she was the perfect voice for this song. This album has a heavy focus on international collaborations and I wanted to let her have the creativity to express herself and Zambian culture. Her lyrics are a beautiful representation of exactly that and I couldn’t be prouder to be releasing this collaboration together.”
Ng’ambi grew up with a love for traditional percussion, jazz, blues and soul. Following in the footsteps of her grandfather, a retired miner and kalimba player, she developed and interest in singing at a young age. She was then spotted by producer Chali Mulalami who singed her to Sling Beats Records. Ng’ambi has won the Best Singer accolade at the Zambia Women in Music Awards and has received major support from the BBC and BBC Africa. She has presented her work and culture on TEDx.
DJ Poolboi finds inspiration in all forms of music, including experimental, indie, classical, contemporary pop and even film scores. Having focussed predominantly on the realms of techno and house, this unique African-inspired collaboration can be likened to the works of Fakear and Black Coffee.
