Bio
Thamsanqa Mathonsi, also known as T_Musiq, is a Durban-born multi-talented musician & performing artist who established his career at an early age. In High school, he represented the province as a member of the KwaZulu-Natal Youth Choir, formed his own musical performance group with his classmates to hone his skills in various forms of singing and further became a choirmaster of the school as early as ninth grade.
He started pursuing his career formally after matric and studied music professionally at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, earning a BA in Music & Drama degree. In his second year, he auditioned for Idols Season 12, became a contestant on the show and made it to the top 16. He further became a contestant on the Vodacom NXT Level show where he made it in 2nd place. In the show, he was a fellow contestant with content creator and amapiano star Khanyisa Jaceni, worked closely with and was mentored by Marcus MC and the show's judges, the prominent DJ Zinhle, the late Ricky Rick, the late Mampintsha & fellow band member Danger from Big Nuz, musical maestro Danny K and Dj Euphonic as well as the Legendary Dj Oskido, Dj Cleo and Dr Moruti.
His single 'Thando' took up a storm and became Mzansi's most loved song from the show which rapidly became an anthem to many and created him a fan base. Not only was he loved for his serenading voice, but he became a "household" name when his fans recognized his captivating smile and gave him the name 'Colgate smile'.
After the show, he made more music, singles such as 'Hamba' with producer and former fellow contestant on Vodacom NXT Level Theo.fill us and 'Dreamer' with house DJ and producer DJ France Deep and was signed under a Record Label BlackSpade Entertainment owned by Rnb & Soul artist, mentor & friend Ndumiso 'Brazo' Njapha who also co-wrote 'Dreamer' with Dj France Deep and made singles such as Thembisile which songs are available for streaming on digital platforms.
Since then he has appeared and performed on big stages and opened for the likes of the legendary international soul & RNB artist Chris Walker as well as international award-winning artist Sjava Indlalifa at the Richards Bay Soul & Jazz Festival. He also performed at the Standard Bank National Arts Festival, Grahamstown Makanda National Arts Festival, known as Durban Jazz Lounge –The Jazzy Rainbow as a resident artist, Ukhozi FM Soul of Jazz festival and has performed in musical theatrics to name a few. He was also a member of the prestige Ethekwini Gospel Choir founded by the well-known Gospel artist Ntokozo Ngongoma and performed on small stages as well, such as weddings and other intimate events.
Thamsanqa has also appeared on the prominent television soapie & drama Rhythm City as a call-in actor and scored himself a position of being a voice-over artist for one of the biggest network service providers in South Africa, Vodacom. Having made such strides in the industry, it...
