Akuvi reflects on fractured relationships in new single Strangers ahead of EP

Ghanaian-Norwegian Afro-fusion artist Akuvi has released a new single titled ‘Strangers’, ahead of her forthcoming EP Afro-beats for Emotional Gangsters, set for release on 28 May.
The song blends Afro-beats with R&B and neo-soul influences, presenting a more subdued and cinematic sound compared with her earlier work. Produced by Soulbase, Strangers focuses on the emotional consequences of romantic relationships that develop at the expense of friendships.
The track narrates the shift from strangers to lovers and back again, anchored by a minimal production style and introspective lyrics.
Akuvi described the single as “if a James Bond soundtrack was Afro-beats”, adding that it reflects a deeply personal experience. “Have you ever regretted exploring a romantic relationship? Like the person was so dope that a friendship would serve you more? ‘Strangers’ tells that story… This time I will learn,” she said.
The release arrives amid increasing international visibility for the artist. She recently performed at the Forbes Leading Women Summit, where she appeared as both speaker and performer.
Her profile has also been highlighted by publications including GQ South Africa, Glamour South Africa and Billboard Africa, which have featured her as part of a new wave of contemporary African artists.
Strangers follows previous releases such as Dream Big, featuring Stonebwoy, and Diamonds, which gained renewed attention online and expanded her audience across Africa and the diaspora.
The forthcoming EP Afro-beats for Emotional Gangsters will comprise six tracks exploring themes including love, anxiety, healing and self-reflection. The project includes previously released songs as well as new material such as Poison and collaborations, including Woah featuring Mellissa.
Akuvi has described the EP’s concept as centred on emotional honesty. “It’s about being strong enough to feel everything, even if you cry first,” she said.
To support the release, she is scheduled to headline Akuvi & Friends – The Dream Big Experience in Oslo, Norway, in May, coinciding with the EP launch.
Born in Ghana’s Volta Region and raised partly in Norway, Akuvi has developed a career spanning music and voice acting. She has provided Norwegian-language voices for characters in productions including Disney’s Encanto and Netflix’s Karma’s World.
Her recent performances include appearances at Afro-future Festival and opening slots for artists such as Stonebwoy and Shenseea.
Strangers is available on all major streaming platforms.
