Ghana's Santrofi drops debut album Alewa
Ghanaian band Santrofi's debut album Alewa was released today through German label Outhere Records.
The 10-track album features Santrofi's modern take on highlife, Afrobeat and '70s funk.
The title track 'Alewa', which is street slang for a local black-and-white sweet, is also the album's lead single and its main metaphor.
The theme of the album centres on "the need to recognise, accept, tolerate and embrace racial diversity and to build a world with love and unity," Outhere Records said.
The label added: "Santrofi’s debut album Alewa now brings you a new wave of fresh highlife rooted in the past with knowledge of the future directly from the streets of Accra."
Last year, the band, which is led by bass player Emmanuel Ofori, showcased at the Music In Africa Conference for Collaborations, Exchange and Showcases (ACCES) in Accra, Ghana, where the band wowed the crowd with nifty dance moves, expressive instrumentation and a fusion of upbeat musical styles.
