Tanzania: Wasafi TV joins Star Times network

Diamond also took the opportunity to launch the Real Lives of Wasafi reality show, which will highlight artists' careers and the backstory of their success.

The development comes after Minister of Information, Culture, Tourism and Sports in Zanzibar Rashid Ali Juma issued Wasafi TV and Radio with a broadcasting licence earlier this year.

“There are many TV stations doing a great job to lift Tanzanian showbiz and we are glad to join their ranks," Diamond said during Tuesday's announcement.

"Our mandate is to the youth. We are here to give them opportunities to exploit their talents. Wasafi TV will be available to every Star Time subscriber, even those on the cheapest bundles.”

Wasafi TV management has assured viewers that the channel will programme versatile content. As such, it will provide post-match analyses for 2018 FIFA World Cup matches, which Star Times broadcasts.

Wasafi management also addressed concerns that Wasafi TV would give preference to artists singed to the Wasafi music label.

“Let me assure you that we are here to promote the industry as a whole, so I encourage all artists to bring their content," Wasafi's Mkubwa Fela told journalists on Tuesday. "For a long time, live artists have complained of being sidelined but we urge them to come on board and we will support them.”

Wasafi manager Babu Tale also spoke about the upcoming Wasafi Festival. Slated for later this year, the concert tour is expected to make a number stops across Tanzania.

“This year our aim is to ensure our artists are paid well. We are working hard and pushing our sponsors to achieve this. Tanzanian artists need to benefit from their art. We hope to see them taking lavish holidays, living well and investing in their music,” he said.

Earlier this year, Wasafi announced plans to set up a recording studio in Rwanda. The label's operation is also expected to open a branch in Nairobi, Kenya.

Wasafi TV is available on Star Times channel 444.
