Nigeria: Spyro inks deal with The Cake Bizness

The Cake Bizness CEO Gilbert ‘A-Q’ Bani confirmed the development, and revealed that his company will be in charge of the artist's business and strategy. 

Spyro, best known for the 2022 hit ‘Who Is Your Guy’ joins hip hop act Zhus JDO at the company launched in March, said the deal will “change the way the music industry operates.”

The Cake Bizness’ framework blends investment opportunities with a unique equity structure while fostering a collaborative incentive model.

“Every artist in development is a startup and should be treated as such,” Bani said at the launch of the label. “Our vision is an ecosystem where everyone shares artistic expression and everyone gets a piece of the cake.”

Spyro gained mainstream notice in 2022 after the release of his song ‘Billing’, but it is ‘Who Is Your Guy’ that established him as a leading new voice. The song’s remix, featuring Tiwa Savage won the award for Best Collaboration at both the 2023 Headies and AFRIMMA Awards. He is also behind recent singles ‘Only Fine Girl’ and ‘Shutdowd’ featuring Phyno.

Months ago, reflecting on the company’s success with Zhus JDO, Bani explained that he faced a choice between focusing on the artist or the song. Opting for the artist, Bani said he designed every aspect, from the studio process to the single release, to narrate the artist’s story. This approach involved adapting to various platforms, which, he believed, led to growing Instagram followers from 6 000 to 31 000 and Spotify listeners from 800 to 25 000.
