2016 Africa Meets Reggae music festival opens in Lagos
Africa meets reggae festival will hold this weekend, 26 November 2016, in Lagos at the hockey pitch of the National Stadium in Surulere.
The 2016 festival, the third edition of this annual event, is tagged ‘One People’. It hopes to bring fans of reggae music as well as those of other genres of music to the festival venue in Lagos.
Africa Meets Reggae was franchised to Nigeria by Victor Essiet with Mystic Records from its roots in Los Angeles USA under Echodelic Music and Dub Club production. In its three-year run, the festival has featured various artistes from Nigeria and other parts of the continent including Tee Mac, Oritz Wiliki, Black Face, Ras Kimono among others.
Essiet has spoken of a desire to have the festival open to more people. In a conversation with the Jamaican observer, he said, “The expectations for this year are to show the growth of the festival and the resurgence of reggae by the young up-and-coming artistes, as well as the veterans like myself and Majek Fashek that paved the way for the music.” Last years festival had about 15000 people in attendance, and the organisers hope to have an even greater number this year.
Performing at the festival this year will be Majek Fashek and Victor Essiet, legends of the genre in Nigeria, alongside younger acts from other parts of the continent, including Lucky Dube's daughter, Nkulee Dube (South Africa), Illest Nana (Ghana), BIG BOG (Sierra Leone), and, from Nigeria, Seyi Shay, King Wadada, Oritsefemi, Pasuma, Small Doctor, Patoranking, among others.
