10 Questions for Aduke

Nigerian singer-songwriter Aduke spoke to Music in Africa on the occasion of the release of a video for her single 'Ori Taiye'. She talks about the new song, her career and her plans for the future.

1. Is this your "official" debut single?

No. 'Ori Taiye' is the seventh song I have released officially.

2. If it isn't, where has Aduke been in the time since she released her last single?

I have been underground honing my talent and making sure that I have what it takes to give excellence for a long time.

3. You are known to use a band. Are they responsible for the song's instrumentation?

Yes. It was recorded live with my band.

4. The song has been released for some time. Can you talk about why the video is just been released?

I chose to release this song with a visual because I have been away for a long time. I believe my fans deserve extra for patiently waiting.

5. 'Ori Taiye' is recorded in Yoruba. What is it about?

The song is about life. How we humans tend to compare our lives with others, how people are put under pressure just because they compare their lives with other. It's a song that tells us that we all have different journeys.

6. It is a song with a message: Why was it necessary to release this particular song as your return?

For a while my progress as a musician bothered me. I was worried. I listened to people who made it a duty to tell me how talented I was but they did it by putting others down and that I deserve more than those who were successful. It made me depressed. This song was the revelation that I had. It brought me out of depression and now I understand life better and I want to share that truth with the world.

7. Are there any artists we should expect you to collaborate with?

Lots of them. I'm looking forward to collaborations. Kayefi, Ric Hassani, Aramide and a few others.

8. Is Aduke back to recording and releasing music regularly?

I am back and I promise to be here for a long time.

9. What are the plans for the future? Album? Singles? Touring?

An album is in the works this year. More videos. A tour is a must. Performance is my strength. Dates and details will be communicated soon.

10. Where was the video for the new single shot?

Bariga in Lagos. I chose Bariga because it is a place that means so much to me.
