Nigeria’s Publiseer to distribute songs on YouTube Music
Nigerian publishing start-up Publiseer has announced a deal that enables it to distribute songs on YouTube Music. Publiseer is home to over a hundred independent writers and musicians.
The platform previously had maintained a relationship with such distributors as Amazon Music, Apple iTunes, Google Play Music, Pandora, Spotify and Deezer. YouTube has been added to the list of distributors artists on Publiseer can have access to.
Created by Nigerian twin brothers Chidi and Chika Nwaogu, Publiseer is a digital content distribution platform. It is, according to an official statement, “tailored to meet the growing needs of independent African writers and musicians, especially those from low-income communities. Publiseer lets writers and musicians distribute and monetise their creative works across over 400 digital stores in 100 countries, at no charge, with just a single click.”
Explaining the inspiration for the company, Chidi Nwaogu, who is also the company's CEO, told an interviewer that "artists spend so much on publishing that they have very little money left to market their book or album. That is where Publiseer comes in. We are the publishing company for the third world."
Although it was launched in Nigeria towards the end of last year, since August, Publiseer has offered its services to Ghanaian artists as well. “Ghana has an amazing music industry that spreads across Africa and even the world,” Chidi Nwaogu said. “The book publishing industry in Ghana is also huge, and Publiseer wants to tap into this huge resource.”
The new arrangement with YouTube means that acts in Nigeria and Ghana will have access to the YouTube Music platform. And for users, all streaming, download sales and royalties are reported in one place, with Publiseer’s "beautiful, powerful, and easy-to-read reporting tool".
“Adding YouTube Music is something we’ve always wanted to do for our artists for quite a while, and we’re happy and excited about what this will mean, going forward,” Chidi Nwaogu said.
“We’re thrilled to be able to offer the convenience of one-stop distribution. We’ve been asked about distributing to YouTube Music for quite some time, and it’s a pleasure to be able to offer this to our artists.”
