Wizkid teams up with Wale on My Love
Nigerian popstar Wizkid has teamed up with American rapper Wale on the latter’s new single ‘My Love’. The song also features British act Dua Lipa.
‘My Love’ is the latest collaboration between Wale and Nigerian acts. His previous single ‘Fine Girl’ featured Olamide and Davido. Both songs are taken from Wale’s fifth album ‘Shine’, which was released in April.
From the start of his career, Wale has shown a willingness to incorporate West African rhythms in his music, notably sampling ‘Let Me Love You’ by Sierra Leonean singer Bunny Mack on ‘My Sweetie’, a bonus track from his 2009 debut album Attention Deficit.
Over the past few years, Wale, whose parents are both Yoruba from Nigeria but moved to the US in the 1970s, has taken to recording music with some of Nigeria’s popular artists. And in 2015, the rapper made a documentary about connecting with his Nigerian heritage. Last year, a photo of the rapper in company of DJ Jimmy Jatt and music industry mogul Obi Asika appeared online. The photo was said to be taken at the wedding of a radio personality.
For Nigerian pop fans, ‘My Love’ represents another international collaboration for Wizkid, the artist who has become the poster boy for his generation of pop singers’ global aspirations.
Already famous around Africa, Wizkid has drawn attention from the US after his work with Canadian rapper Drake ‘One Dance’ reached the top of the Billboard charts. A subsequent single from both acts ‘Come Closer’ has since been released, and Wizkid’s first album under Sony Music, Sounds from the Other Side, features such acts as Trey Songs and Chris Brown.
The music video for ‘My Love’ sees all three artists having fun on the beach. Watch it below.
