03 Feb 2025 - 14:56
Mozambican Afro-jazz artist Deodato Siquir will perform at the 2025 edition of Winter Jazz Festival in Copenhagen, Denmark on 7 February.
Organised by Nova Concerts, a Scandinavian showbiz agency, the event seeks to offer audiences an immersive musical journey that blends African rhythms with Scandinavian jazz influences.
Siquir will be joined by a talented ensemble of Danish musicians, enhancing the fusion of cultures on stage including Albert Reinholdt (upright & electric bass), Jacob Broholm (piano & keyboards) and Alexander Kraglund (violin, harmonica & backing vocals).
“I’m thrilled to bring together these talented musicians to create a memorable evening of Afro-Nordic jazz, where cultural influences merge into a vibrant and dynamic experience,” Siquir said.
The concert will celebrate Siquir’s latest album, TOGETHER, while also featuring standout tracks from his acclaimed previous albums, Balanço (2007) and Mutema (2011). Known for his dynamic performances as a drummer, percussionist, and guitarist, Siquir has become a prominent figure in the Scandinavian Jazz and World Music scene. His music, rooted in his Mozambican heritage, seamlessly fuses traditional African rhythms with Nordic jazz elements, creating a distinctive and compelling Afro-Nordic sound.
Deodato Siquir, born in 1975 in Maputo, was raised in a musical family. He began teaching himself to play drums at a young age and joined his first band, Escolinha Vamos Brincar, in 1988. By 15, he was performing with professional orchestras in Mozambique. Siquir’s career took off in the 1990s, working as a sideman for various notable musicians in Mozambique. In 2001, he relocated to Scandinavia, where he established himself as a sought-after sideman in the jazz and world music scenes.
As a bandleader, Siquir has released several critically acclaimed albums, including Balanço and Mutema, which climbed the World Music Europe charts. He has collaborated with numerous international musicians and has been awarded the Ngoma Moçambique 2008 Discovery Prize.
