Nigeria’s Tems soundtracks Black Panther sequel
Marvel Studios has released the trailer for the sequel of the 2018 superhero movie Black Panther, with Nigerian singer Tems featuring on its soundtrack.
Dubbed Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the film is due for release on 11 November. The soundtrack to the trailer sees Tems offer a rendition of the Bob Marley classic ‘No Woman, No Cry’ before segueing into a sample of Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Alright’.
The soundtrack to the film’s first instalment, released in February 2018, features African artists including Baaba Maal, Babes Wodumo, Saudi, Yugen Blakrok and Sjava. Now, Tems has joined that elite cast of musicians.
Tems’ latest milestone follows her announcement as a songwriter on Beyoncé’s forthcoming album Renaissance.
Signed to Since ’93/RCA Records, Tems shot to global acclaim after guesting on Wizkid’s chart-topping single ‘Essence’, off his Made in Lagos LP. Her contribution on the song earned her a Best Global Music Performance nomination at the 64th Grammys.
The ‘Crazy Tings’ singer – who is behind two EPs, namely For Broken Ears and If Orange Was a Place – has gone on to record with global stars including Chris Brown, Drake and Future.
Last month, Tems picked up the Best Collaboration and Best International Act awards at the 2022 BET Awards in Los Angeles, and in May, she joined the latest season of the Coke Studio initiative, which is geared toward connecting emerging musical talent.
